The final part of our brake series concludes with how to maintain the braking system in your Land Rover. By now it should be apparent that routine brake service will help to maintain your brake system to keep you safe on the streets. Here is a list of all the essential things you can do to keep your brakes in check (but don’t worry because your qualified Land Rover mechanic will perform all this for you upon a brake check).
Regular Inspections: Perform visual inspections of your brake components regularly. Check the brake pads, rotors, calipers and brake lines for signs of wear, damage or leaks.
Brake Fluid Checks: Check the brake fluid level regularly and top it off if needed. Also, inspect the brake fluid for any signs of contamination or discoloration. Brake fluid should be clear or slightly yellowish; if it's dark or murky, it may need to be flushed and replaced. See the 2nd part in our brake series for more on this.
Brake Pad Replacement: Monitor the thickness of your brake pads and replace them before they wear down too much (before they reach around 3mm thickness).
Rotor Inspection: Check the condition of your brake rotors for signs of warping or uneven wear. If you feel pulsations or vibrations when braking, it may indicate warped rotors that need to be resurfaced or replaced.
Brake Line Inspection: Inspect brake lines for any signs of leaks, corrosion or damage. Replace any worn or damaged brake lines promptly to prevent brake fluid leaks and loss of braking power.
Brake System Bleeding: Bleed the brake system periodically to remove air bubbles and ensure proper brake pedal feel and response.
Proper Driving Habits: Avoid aggressive driving habits that can put unnecessary stress on your brakes, such as hard braking, riding the brakes or towing heavy loads excessively.
Temperature Management: Try to avoid overheating your brakes, especially during long downhill descents or heavy towing.
You can ensure that the braking system in your Land Rover will remain in optimal condition if you follow these maintenance steps and have the brakes regularly inspected by an experienced Land Rover mechanic that is local to your area.
